How to prepare for Tattoo Consultation

Hey there, beautiful! So, you’ve decided to get a tattoo, you’re ready for your consultation—exciting!

This is the first step toward turning your idea into a stunning piece of body art.

To make the most of your consultation, here’s how you can prepare and what to expect.

First Things First: What This Appointment is For

This consultation is all about refining your idea, answering your questions, and making sure you and your artist are on the same page. It’s NOT a tattoo session, and usually you won’t be getting a design at this stage. Instead, you’ll discuss your concept and how it can be brought to life.

Every tattoo artist is different, with their own way of working and specific rules, so always ask how they handle consultations. This post is based on how I work.

For my consultations, you have two options when it comes to your tattoo design:

  • Create it together on the day of your tattoo appointment – This works well if you’re decisive and comfortable finalizing details in the moment.

  • Purchase the design in advance – This is the better option if you want to see and approve your tattoo before your session. It allows you to review it, request any changes, and be 100% confident before getting inked.

Ask your artist if they offer this option – I do! 🙂

What You Need to Bring

  • A Clear Idea – Your artist can help refine your concept, but they can’t choose for you. Have at least a basic idea of what you want—whether it’s a style, subject, or meaning behind the tattoo.

  • Reference Images – If you’ve seen tattoos or artwork that inspire you, bring them! Even if you only like certain elements, they help your artist understand your vision.

  • Placement Ideas – Think about where you’d like your tattoo. Some designs work better on certain body parts, and your artist can guide you through that.

  • Any Important Info – If you have allergies, skin sensitivities, or any health conditions that may affect the tattooing process, be sure to mention them.

Questions to Ask at Your Consultation

This is your chance to ask anything and everything! Here are some great questions to consider:

  • Does this style work for my idea?

  • What would be a good placement for this tattoo?

  • Do you have experience tattoing in this style?
  • How big should my tattoo be for the level of detail I want?

  • What’s your design process? Do you show me the design beforehand for review?

  • What should I do to prepare my skin before the tattoo session?

  • How long will my tattoo take?

  • Do you offer a free touch-up?

  • What’s your booking process like?

  • How much will it cost?

  • What’s your availability?

  • Do you require a deposit?

  • What’s the best way to care for my tattoo after it’s done?

What Happens Next?

After your consultation, if you and your artist feel it’s a great fit, you’ll move forward with booking your tattoo session.

If you’ve purchased your design from me, you’ll get to review it around a week after purchase. Once you receive it, I’m happy to adjust it to make it perfect for you. You can get it tattooed with me or with another artist—I’m totally fine with that.

Otherwise, if you want to book with me and didn’t purchase a design, it will be created together on the day of your tattoo session.

Enjoy the process, trust your artist, and get ready to bring your tattoo idea to life! 💫
